Cambodia suffers a recent history of corruption and genocide. The demented Khmer Rouge organization murdered as many as a few million people and pillaged the country of it's culture and heritage. This rampage would end as recently as the 1980's.
Angkor Wat and its surrounding area remains astounding, scattered with religious monuments of gargantuan proportion. The atheist Khmer Rouge stripped many religious statues of their heads, though many of the 800 year old buildings still stand tall or in minor ruin. Enormous trees, many hundreds of years in age, grow out of some of the massive structures - this part blew my mind because it just cannot exist in the states.
